LAST WORD OF MAHATMA GANDHI

Call for Bihar Bandh an Exercise in Futility; Says Tiwar
Janata Dal – U national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari in Patna on Wednesday ridiculed the January 25 statewide bandh called by all opposition parties saying the move was laughable particularly in view of the fact that the people of Kahalgaon had already withdrawn their stir over power issue in their region."Protesting against the Nitish government over power issue is not going to solve the problem in the state. Instead, they should be raising ruckus against the Central government that is solely responsible for the pathetic power situation in Bihar," said the JD-U leader.Tiwari further said that the opposition parties were itching to bring down the legitimately-elected NDA government in Bihar and the whole idea behind the January 25 bandh was to paralyze normal functioning of the state for purely political reasons.

BJP Mahila Morcha Demands
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Ladies Front in Patna on Wednesday announced its decision to demonstrate in Delhi on February 21 to demand 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and the state Assemblies saying the gender ratio currently was way out of proportion in favor of men in the nation's democratic structure. The Front's national president Meera Kawaria said a rally would first be organized at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan after which they would take their demands to the Parliament."Sonia Gandhi had promised to bring more women in the Parliament but in spite of being in power for nearly four years, she is yet to take a single step to keep her words," Kawaria said adding the rally would either give more empowerment to the women or expose the UPA government for what it actually is."The myth that women cannot win elections was shattered in the recently-concluded Assembly polls in Gujarat where 17 out of 22 women candidates won their seats while 4 out of 6 won in Himachal Pradesh," she said.More than 10,000 women from Bihar are expected to participate in the rally in Delhi, BJP leaders said.

Anti-VC Protest
Turning up heat on the state government, a host of students' union in Patna on Wednesday demonstrated throughout the city and burnt the effigy of Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri to demand for his removal.Dharnas and processions were organized at the Kargil Chowk and the Income Tax roundabout by the members of Students' Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Students' Janata Dal – U, and National Students' Union of India (NSUI) who accused the Vice Chancellor of being incompetent, promoting financial irregularities, and running the university affairs in a dictatorial manner.Demanding his resignation, the protestors also took out a mock funeral of Dr. Simadri.Meanwhile, several students not associated with the above mentioned outfits, took out their own rally in support of the Vice Chancellor who, they said, was trying to restore some sanity in the university which had lost its academic status thanks to the previous government's lackadaisical attitude towards education and ineptness of former Vice Chancellors."For almost two decades, these students have gotten away with crime in the name of education. Cheating in exams became a standard operating procedure under the previous governments, and criminal elements with the backing of a handful of politicians took control of the university functioning while filling the hostels with criminals. Dr. Simadri tried to put an end to all these and that is why he is now facing the wrath of the status quo," said Arif Mohammed, a member of the Dalit Backward Muslim Front and a Simadri sympathizer.

No Trace
More than 72 hours since the disappearance of Bihar Legislative Council clerk Akhilesh Singh, the police are yet to find a clue in the case diminishing the chances of finding the victim by the passing of each hour.On Sunday, divers searched a pond from where Singh's motorcycle was found abandoned but still there were no signs of the missing person. The fact that the family members of Singh have not received any ransom call yet is further causing concerns for the authorities who think the victim may not be alive anymore though officially they are keeping a tight lip on the direction of their investigation. As reported, Singh was involved in money lending business and that could have some bearing on his sudden disappearance, family members admitted.Sachivalaya DSP Sridhar Mandal said the police were investigating the case from various angles and until the body is recovered, it would continue to treat it as a case of a missing person while not ruling out abduction entirely.
Mr.Kumar Decries ID Policy of Delhi
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday expressed his displeasure with the Delhi government's decision to require people to carry identification cards every time they stepped out of their homes saying this was a 'weapon that was clearly designed to exploit the ordinary people'.In a letter written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Kumar urged the Center to intervene in the matter and order an immediate repeal of the proposal as suggested by Delhi Governor Tejendra Khanna and a wink wink, nudge nudge from Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit though Dixit later denied having even known about the Governor's scheme."This is an attack on the basic rights of the citizens of India and an insult to those Biharis who have chosen to make New Delhi as their new home. The Governor's proposal, if implemented, would give unprecedented power to the bureaucrats who would use it to settle personal scores while harassing people from outside," the Chief Minister said.Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state vice president Lalita Singh Yadav also condemned the proposal and demanded resignation of Delhi Governor saying his diktat reminded everyone of the Muhammed bin Tughlaq, the 14th century ruler who was equally 'crazy' about imposing rules and policies that were ineffective and meaningless."Delhi is the capital of the nation and it attracts people from all over the country including Bihar. It would be impossible to demand from everyone to carry identification cards all the time. However, the Delhi administration will have a field day harassing innocent people who just happened to leave their wallets home," said Yadav.Meanwhile, the students' wing of the Janata Dal - U took out a silent procession against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Dixit in Patna on Sunday accusing the UPA government of being dictatorial and anti-Bihari.

Anti - Polio
