Security at Bihar Prisons Tightened

Senior police officials in Patna on Thursday said the government was aware of the Maoist insurgents' intention to blow up jails in Bihar to free their jailed comrades on the pattern of Jehanabad jail break in 2005 when Naxalites managed to free over 300 prisoners, including their leader Ajay Kanu."We have credible intelligence report to believe that the ultras are planning to blow up jails in Bihar. However, appropriates steps have been taken to foil any such attempt and moles have been planted in all district prisons to monitor all activities," Prison IG Sandeep Paundrik said on Thursday. The government has summoned a list of all Maoists currently in Bihar jails and instructions have been sent out to prison officials to keep strict vigil on all the visitors to prevent smuggling of any explosives or other weapons that may be used to break the jail, the IG said.Later, Paundrik and Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah flew to Sasaram and Bhabhua Jails to conduct unannounced inspection of the cells and the readiness of the jail officials in case of any eventuality."We will not allow any gang-related activities in Bihar prisons and any attempt to breach the security of the jails would be countered with extreme force," Amanullah said.Paundrik also suspended the Assistant Jailor of Sasaram Jail upon hearing that alcoholic drinks were smuggled in for consumption by some inmates.
